Santa Cruz: Blue Skies & Good Vibes
Okay to be fair it wasn’t blue skies all day. But let’s start from the beginning.
We pulled into the parking lot at around 11:30 Memorial Day Monday, and it was absolutely freezing. As in, freezing enough for me to put on a hoodie at the beach. YUP I’m not kidding. Either way, we headed up through the boardwalk into the beach and set ourselves up. Around 1pm, the clouds cleared and with the sun it got much warmer. Not quite bikini warm, but that didn’t really stop me. Waves are quite large here later in the afternoon, so I got my pants wet anyways first – not that I needed an excuse to hang out in my brand new Victoria’s Secret bikini (ahem how cute is it though?)
(yes this was me bundled up at 11:30am)
I absolutely adore the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. It’s super colourful, makes for great photos. As someone from Toronto, it’s honestly the perfect blend of the CNE mixed with the vibes of the west coast beaches.
In case you aren’t familiar, the boardwalks on the west coast generally have a carnival feel to them. There’s rides, carnival games, and lots of fair food. I rode two of the rides. “Undertow”- which has a kind of a Crazy Mouse feel (for you CNE fans), and the Giant Dipper (featured below) – which is a wooden coaster that has apparently been around since 1924. Perfect opportunities to take a break from tanning on the beach!
I also discovered this really awesome thing today. GARLIC FRIES!! It’s literally fries with garlic and seasoning on it and it’s absolutely amazing. Thank you America for coming up with these strange but delicious concoctions. I had the fries with fish and shrimp. I guess you could say it’s almost like fish and chips, but not really?
Apparently, there’s also this train that goes all the way to the Redwood Parks. How cool is the vintage feel of this train though? I honestly had a field-day with the colourful photo-ops. True Cali feel throughout the beach. Then again we are in California, so I guess that’s a given.
Overall thoughts? IN LOVE. If it had been a few degrees warmer it would have been perfect. There’s a lot of different things to do for everyone. I wish I had more time to spend here and explore. I will 100% be back. I’m looking to try out surfing, and Santa Cruz supposedly has some of the best surf spots in the world. Maybe next time I’ll get to feature some shots of me falling off a surfboard. Just maybe.
Stay Golden friends.
